Are You Truly Happy in Your Business?

Kelly Goodman • January 1, 2025

As entrepreneurs and small business owners, we often hear the phrase "Happy New Year!" or feel the buzz of a fresh start as the clock strikes midnight. But, do you feel it? Does the change in the calendar bring the kind of happiness that sticks, or is it just a fleeting moment of optimism? As business owners, the pressures of our work can make it harder to truly assess our happiness. Is your happiness tied to milestones like your sales numbers, your social media following, or the success of a recent project? If you're questioning your happiness right now, you're not alone. Read on for some insights that might help you reconnect with a deeper sense of joy.

Happiness Is a Mindset, Not a Result

As entrepreneurs, we often tie our happiness to external factors—hitting our revenue targets, getting positive reviews, expanding our team, or even landing that one big client. But happiness rooted solely in external achievements is fragile. When we hinge our happiness on these outcomes, we risk becoming disillusioned when things don't go as planned. You may have felt this way: you were happy when you signed your first client or made your first sale, but when things didn’t go as expected, the joy faded quickly.

Early in life, we’re taught to equate happiness with "having" things: toys, treats, and, eventually, cars, clothes, and careers. As entrepreneurs, we fall into the same trap, believing we need to “have” certain accomplishments or possessions to be happy. But the reality is that true happiness comes from within, not from external factors that can be fleeting.

Can You Be Happy Without the Perfect Business?

As small business owners, we often face uncertainty—cash flow issues, slow months, customer complaints, or missed opportunities. It's easy to think that happiness will arrive when things finally “work out” or when your business hits its next big milestone. But what if I told you that you can still find joy—even in moments of struggle?

Here’s how this might look in your business:

  • I’m not hitting all my sales targets. I am learning and growing each day. I am happy.
  • My business isn't where I want it to be yet. I’m making steady progress. I am happy.
  • I’m juggling multiple roles in my business. I find peace in knowing I’m capable of handling it. I am happy.

Happiness in business comes when you find peace with where you are now, rather than constantly chasing an idealized future. This mindset isn’t about being passive, but about acknowledging your present situation and finding satisfaction in your journey, even if it’s imperfect.

Practicing Self-Awareness as a Business Owner

In the hustle of entrepreneurship, it's easy to lose touch with your emotions and well-being. But practicing self-awareness is key to maintaining happiness in your business. The pressure of growing a business can cause stress, burnout, and overwhelm. When you’re aware of your emotional and mental states, you can respond to challenges with more clarity and less frustration. Here are some journal prompts to help you check in with yourself:

  1. How do I feel about my business right now? Take a moment to tune into your body, mind, and emotions. Are you anxious, excited, stressed, or content? Be honest with yourself about how you're feeling.
  2. What triggered my current emotional state? Reflect on recent events or interactions. Did a setback or a difficult client interaction trigger frustration? Pinpointing the cause helps you address it more effectively.
  3. What would make my workday more fulfilling right now? Identify small actions you can take to shift your energy. Maybe it’s delegating tasks, taking a break, or shifting your focus to something more rewarding.
  4. What am I grateful for in my business today? Gratitude is a powerful tool, especially when you're navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship. Reflect on the wins, big or small, and what you've learned along the way.
  5. How do I typically react to setbacks or stress? Understanding your default reactions allows you to develop healthier coping mechanisms. Maybe you need a five-minute break, or perhaps you need to reach out to a mentor for support.

Mantras to Stay Centered and Resilient

When you’re building and growing a business, your mental resilience is critical. These mantras can help you stay grounded and focused on your happiness as you work through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship:

  • "I am present, I am aware." Use this mantra to stay grounded in the moment and avoid becoming overwhelmed by future uncertainties.
  • "I release what no longer serves me." This mantra helps you detach from outdated beliefs or negative patterns that might be hindering your growth, both personally and professionally.
  • "With every challenge, I grow in strength and joy." Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remember that each obstacle brings you closer to becoming the business owner you aspire to be.

Final Thoughts: Happiness Is an Inside Job

As an entrepreneur, your happiness is not solely tied to your revenue or the approval of others. The success of your business won’t always be a clear path, but you can create a foundation of peace and contentment within yourself. Your happiness starts with you—your mindset, your practices, and how you choose to respond to the inevitable challenges that come with entrepreneurship.

When you learn to detach from the need for external validation and instead focus on what you can control—your thoughts, your perspective, and your actions—you’ll find a more sustainable, fulfilling kind of happiness that fuels your business and enriches your life.

May your journey as a business owner be one filled with self-awareness, peace, and the joy that comes from building something meaningful.
